Newsletter and Search - Services added to "Industrial Technologies & Witchcraft".

We are setting up a low frequency newsletter which is published roughly 4 times a year. We think of it mainly as a means to stay in contact with our clients and business friends, but it is completely open to everyone who likes to know what's going on. It compiles stuff from this publication by e-mediate Ltd..co.uk" target="_blank">e-mediate Ltd. Ltd. and TextLab, also the publishers of this blog, and other company news.

The search button, now on the front page, allows for a search of the news and news archives. The CMS we are using, Coranto, is still in alpha stage (you'd never thought, wouldn't you?) and the search engine is missing. So we temporary use Atomz, who - by the way - also offer Atomz publish, an interesting web-based CMS. (June 26., 2001, )

Name hopping - As promised before , this blog is a chameleon one, so we consider changing the name again.

Frannie aka Dr. F. W. Wray, our collegue from Cambridge, located in South France, working in Edinburgh (yessir that's Europe) has suggested a new name:

"How about "X-tracts" for the name. This avoids the e prefix which has probably now been used for every word possible. [...] Tract also means Expanse, Area, Region, Territory, Stretch, District, Extent which has quite a nice feel. "

X-tracts... mhmmmm... X-tracts? OK, let's ferment it over night and see what comes up.

Channel 4665 - Applied Technology & Witchcraft: Redaktionssystem, RSS-Datei und UserLand vertragen sich.

Aus völlig unklaren Gründen kann das hier benutze Redaktionssystem (NewsPro 4 bzw. Coranto Alpha) nur dann astreine RSS-Dateien schreiben, wenn es zu Hause auf dem Intranetserver läuft. Beim Provider fehlten immer die Backlinks, und nachdem selbst elvii, der amphibische Master, sich die Sache nicht mehr erklären konnte, haben wir uns zum klügeren Teil erklärt und alles vom Web wieder zurück ins Intranet verfrachtet. Beide Server sind Linux-Systeme, und nachdem redaktionssystem-seitig keinerlei Abhängigkeit von RSS-Modulen besteht, fällt die Angelegenheit wohl endgültig und zu Recht in die Kategorie "Technology & Witchcraft". Jetzt haben wir einen validierten RSS-feed, der nur mit einigen Parsern bei den Umlauts hin und wieder zickt, aber der über UserLand-Kanal 4665 zu empfangen ist.
Wer eine Ahnung hat, was der Grund für dieses RSS-Heimatweh sein könnte, schreibe mir eine mail. (June 16., 2001, )

Work in Progress - We bring back new jobs from Berlin and find an almost forgotten contract.

We've been to a BMWi conference in Berlin yesterday. 150 people and 300 ties. In a rather interesting controversial political situation, we are asked to continue and expand our services for the BMWi, targeting SMEs in particular.

Back home, we found a finally signed contract to produce a handbook and a CD-ROM for a German states bank about "PGP for the Housewife". Their idea is to provide a secure mail service for private bank clients. This was initiated almost a year ago. Good things surely take a while.

Note to my Chauffeur - The German Minister of Economics and Technology has invited us for a conference next week. Yeah, we are important.

EU member states are preparing an Internet security system, and so does the German government. Since we are doing some online editorial and consulting services for them, the Ministry has invited us to a working conference "Partnership Internet" in Berlin next week. The inviting email states that "chauffeurs have to stay with the cars". I must not forget to tell my chauffeur... (June 10., 2001, )

alphaville - Ok, its over. Finished. Terminado. Fertig. Aus. We are Beta now.

Behind the scene, peculiar dwarfts and gnoms have been busy day and night setting up witchcraft and sufficiently high technology (which, as we know, is indistinguishable, while any sufficiently low technology is indistinguishable from work) for this web publication. Now, technology works. In principle, as usual.

You, the Blog, are decleared Beta now, and you shall have a name.

This is the witchcraft part of the initiation: trying out names. Kids should be allowed to do this anyway. Sociology and all that, you know.

So, for a certain period of time, this will be a chameleon web publication with varying names.
